Now that we have unfortunately had to wipe the site clean and we are starting over here, this might be a good time to introduce yourself or RE-introduce yourself to our shooting community.

I’ll start, my bio in a nut shell…

I’ve been involved in shooting sports since I was about 10 years old when my father gave me a Red Ryder BB gun and I would setup tin cans in the back yard and hone me shooting skills. After high school I went right into the U.S. Navy, and spent 6 years in the submarine force.

It was while I was in the Navy attached to the USS George Washington Carver, that I got the opportunity to join the security rifle team and become a member of the nuclear weapons security team. Our unit regularly received instruction and shot with marine sniper and security forces. After formal instruction we always had informal competitions between the marine and navy units. There were a few occasions that I bested a few marine snipes although rare.(Grin) (Go Blue!) But I did learn the joys of rifle competition from some of the best shooters in our military.

For the next 12 years I’ve been active in my local gun club running various types of smallbore rifle matches both indoors and outdoors. I was lucky enough to shoot with some of the best New York State shooters in the 2006 Empire State games, and won a silver medal in the individual prone competition. I love the shooting sports especially smallbore rifle. I’ve been running a smallbore related web site in one form or another since the mid 1990’s.

Although it has nothing to do with shooting, 2 years ago I went through a wicked ugly divorce which has taken a huge toll on my available time. I’ve had to take on a second job to pay lawyers, court costs, alimony (maintenance in New York State) and keep a roof over my kid’s heads.

Now here we are in the present, my main rifle is an Anschutz 1913, I shoot iron sights (most of the time), the rifle loves Eley Black or TenX Red, and I shoot best in Prone and Kneeling. My offhand sucks BIG TIME! My personal best for a 1600 prone match is a 1598 47x (that was with iron sights!) (that was also some 10 years ago before my eyes started getting weird)

Ok, so what about you?

Have a great day
Jim

I'll jump on this bandwagon. I started shooting smallbore about 43 years ago, when I was 12. The only hiatus I took was while I was in college. At one time, I held smallbore classifications in numerous position and prone disciplines, in addition to some high power rifle classifications. These days, the only smallbore classifications I have and shooting I do are in conventional and metric prone. I split my shooting time between smallbore prone and both mid-range and long-range high power rifle. I find that there just isn't enough time to do as much shooting as I would like to. Maybe one of these days, time will free up and I'll be able to spend more time on the range.

Does this mean my Time Magazine cover avatar is gone? Sad

I just went through a rebuild of our regions racing website, so I feel your pain.

So let me re-introduce myself. My name is Jim and I'm a shoot-aholic. I started shooting smallbore in high school as a freshman (13?). So that puts me at 17 years of experience. I'm a regular at the Empire State Games and Camp Perry. I coached a local high school team for 4 years and had to give it up recently. I let my practice slide a bit in recent years, but getting back into it this winter. All of my accomplishments have been with my trusty Winchester 52B.

My story, shot competitively for the better part of 30 years. Pretty much exclusively smallbore and air rifle. Broke into 1160s on the A-36 indoor course a few times, 1145 or so was best outside on A-50 target.

Walked away from competitive shooting and coaching out of disgust with some things the NRA was doing. I still follow what is up with ISSF Smallbore Prone and 3P as well as Air Rifle

Occasionally I still suit up for a local club match.

Mostly I shoot against myself and study the art of what makes a good rifle a great rifle.

Hello All,

My name is Shawn McKenna, I am a competitive High-Power shooter, I used to shoot smallbore back in the 1990's, I got away from it and am now looking to get back into smallbore and Air rifle, more Air Rifle than Smallbore. I have been shooting in one way or another for the last 25 years, Mostly High-Power.

I just started a new job working for Try&Bom Inc. in our new store in Colorado Springs, We carry Monard, Kusterman, AHG Anschutz and MEC Products. This is 90% the reason why I am looking to get back into smallbore, being around all that shooting stuff all the time.

Anyway, I look forward to becoming more involved in smallbore and Air Rifle.

Thanks,
Shawn

Ahhhh Poooo.... I did a quick search of the last back of the site and I could not find the avatar of the man of the year. But I did find the original picture. So you can re-size it if you like. Smile

Mike Landolfi here. I am, also, a highpower shooter. Over the last couple of years, I have focused more on mid-range and long range prone. I got into the shooting sports late in life; symptomatic of growing up/living in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.

I have used small bore and, more recently, air rifle as training for highpower prone shooting. For outdoor smallbore prone, I have a 40x with a Hart barrel in a Elisio tube gun stock. For indoor, I have a an Anschutz 54, and I recently acquired a Hammerli air rifle

Neal Eriksen here. I started shooting smallbore while I was in high school at the suggestion of a friend. I shot for a couple of years and then hung it up as I got busy with life. Fortunately, I met my now wife whose father is a competitive shooter. He got me back into shooting, both highpower and smallbore. John generously allows me to use his Anschutz 1411 for smallbore and a Rem. 40XC for highpower.

Hi Everyone!
I got back into shooting about 5 years ago, having a great time with informal shooting. I really like the straight up target rifles and have a nice collection. Over the last few years I've followed this forum and applied what I've picked up to my shooting. I've only competed in the CMP Rimfire Sporter matches to date. I've been trying to move over to NRA prone matches and I will not be denied this year. I really enjoy competition but have had a belly full of trying to make ordinary rifles act like real target rifles. Don't even ask about last season. Time to get serious!!
I got lucky recently (actually I worked very hard and was rewarded for it) and was able to buy an Anschutz 1913.
I've got all the other parts so I'm itchy all over to get going on this.
I hope to meet some of you out there!

This is an interesting thread. Most forums are cloaked in anonymity.

My name is Bill Burkert from Fleetwood, PA. I own a specialty lumber business, am married for 35 years, and have one son who is in the business with me. At 57 years old, I acquired my 3P Distinquished Master classification of which I am quite proud. I completed my quest at Camp Perry last summer. My goal now is to get the same classification in outdoor prone.

I got into small bore shooting in 1976 at age 25 when my Uncle Bob introduced me to the sport. I competed for Cartech in southeastern Pennsylvania's Inter-County Rifle League until 1991 when we lost our indoor range. Back then I used a 1413 Anschutz free rifle.

I resumed shooting in 2001. I now shoot for New Holland in the Inter-County Rifle League (ICRL). I am league secretary. I invite everyone to view our website and shoot in our league if you are local or as a guest passing through. It is a fine league with a 20 match indoor season and a 15 match outdoor prone season. Our league has yielded two Olympians - Mary Ann Schweitzer - air rifle at the Los Angeles games and Jamie Beyerle -air rifle and 3P in China.

In 2009 our league swept the Pennsylvania State Prone Championships, a feat of which we are justifiably proud.

What a difference my ten year hiatus made in the quality of the equipment and the scores. In order to compete in 2002 I bought a new 2013 Anschutz free rifle, a new Monard jacket and Sauer pants. After several years I was not satisfied with the Anschutz barrel and replaced it with a Lilja. I use a Bushnell Elite 4200 6x-24x scope and the 30mm Right Sight (front) and Anschutz rear irons.

This summer I am planning to use my recently purchased 52E Winchester with a Masterclass prone stock and a Leupold 36X for prone competition saving the Anschutz for 3P. I'll use the aforementioned iron sights on this rifle also. Initial results at 100 yards with the original Winchester barrel are encouraging. The International Free Rifle stock also came with this rifle.

I know one other member of this forum - justinincredible, and look forward to more battles with him this summer. Whatever advice he gives on prone shooting on these forums should be heeded.

Hello all,

My name is Roy and I'm just starting out in smallbore shooting, really shooting of any kind. I've always been intrigued by the sport and after finding a club that is only a few minutes from my house here in Phoenix I figured why not. About four years ago I bought a H&R 5200 with a 16x Redfield scope. Both in almost mint condition. After doing some research I've figured out this is a good introductory rifle. So, I guess it's perfect for me, ha ha.

I've enjoyed reading all of your postings on Smallbore.us and look forward to any tip or tricks that you're willing to share. I will be shooting in my first competition, a Metric 1200, tomorrow morning (5/9). Should be fun!

Hi, my name is Bill, I am retiring from teaching this June and was looking for a new activity. I did a bit of target/field/plinking as a teen and you adult but got too busy with other activities. I joined a local smallbore league at a nearby fish and game club and am looking forward to the matches. I am searching for a rifle and am hoping to get set up soon.

Glad to see the site is back up and running. I am hoping to learn a lot here and will probably asking a lot of questions.

Bill

Hey, my name is Brendan, and I started shooting competitively last year. I had shot a bit with my grandfather in Rotterdam, NY(whom many of the New York shooters might know) when I was younger when I visited in the summers. Unfortunately, I always had to come back to Virginia. and my mom was never too excited about the idea, so it was put on the back burner until I was 25. I have recently caught the bug HARD, and am now hooked for life. I did a few competitions last year, including shooting at Ft Benning in the fall, which was an awesome experience. I am looking forward to doing more this year, hopefully including my first trip to Camp Perry. I'll also be moving to NY within the next year to go to RPI and join my grandfather at the range there, so it looks like I'll be able to keep shooting for a long time to come.

Thanks everyone for the good advise on here, and I hope to see you all on the line!

Hi everyone,
My name is Dave and I live in the Chicagoland area. For the past eight years I've been shooting IPSC/USPSA pistol, with a few three-gun matches thrown in here and there. I really like this sport, but it's a LOT of standing and very little shooting (in a four hour match you might shoot 150 rounds, actually shooting for maybe six or seven minutes; the rest is just standing around and resetting stages. Because there's an equal balance of speed and accuracy, it tends to be less of a mental game and more muscle-memory reactive.)

Like Jimmy, I too began shooting as a kid with a BB gun my father gave me: a Daisy 1894. I eventually bought an FWB 150 air rifle in the late 70s and shot that for many years. I had a brief affair with trap shooting, but eventually I switched to pistols and started shooting bullseye somewhere in college. With the lack of ranges in our area and thinking that it might be fun to find a wife, get a mortgage and become a slave to home improvement and upkeep, my interest waned into simple recreational shooting until I began action shooting.

In the future I would like to get involved in NRA smallbore rifle (if I can find a club that doesn't take two hours to drive to!) This was spurred by my winning a Savage .22 (MKII BV) at a Friends of the NRA dinner. I know it's not a great rifle, but it'll likely out-shoot me until I get proficient enough and decided I enjoy the sport enough to buy a better gun. It will certainly be cheaper than shooting lost brass centerfire!

While I enjoy the competitive aspect of shooting, it's the camaraderie that really does it for me; most of my friends I have met through the shooting sports. I never tire of the friendly faces and positive attitudes of people you meet at a range.

My name is Chris and I'm more of a Service Rifle shooter, but all day in the blazing sun, heat & bugs is getting to be a bit much for my 53 years. I shoot some Smallbore now, mostly during Michigan winters.

I also hunt and shoot a lot of Shotgun Skeet and some Pistol Bowling Pin and PPC.

Does CMP have something else going or did you mean a 1903? (Not a springfield 1903)

31/08/2010 18:32
Anyone ordered one the 1913's from CMP? I was wondering how long it takes to receive the rifle?

Shot in a vintage match today. 03A3 Springfield barks a bit louder than my Anschutz... but I still had fun. Smile

my new 1413 with 1600 series action should be here soon
